PORTISHEAD
what can i say about portishead?
well, if you've not heard any of their stuff, i have indeed found a way to describe them to you.
it's as if you took jessica
rabbit, made her depressed and gave her a guitar... turned her band members
into a string ensemble...
THEN slid in some hip-hop beats and turntable tricks.
viola! PORTISHEAD.
my friend, carmen had
me listen to "only you" one day after school while we were waiting for her
soccer game to start. i loved what i heard, so i made note of what the cd
looked like, who the band was so i could purchase it later.
upon purchasing "portishead:portishead" in december of '98, i became entranced
by the album. i would listen to it at night and write poetry on my computer-
a series of poems were inspired by that album in particular.
at one point there was a slight falling-out in my liking for portishead, only
because i was becoming wrapped up in other bands (as i do love music)..
july '99 proved to change
that. i went to excel at amherst college for a 3-week summer camp and the
dance teacher there had her students dance for the art class i was in. she
turned on a random song and told her students to improvise; just dance to
what they heard. the singing sounded very much like beth gibbons, but the
sound of the music was different, however i asked the dance teacher at the
end of the drawing session if that was portishead, and she said "yes" [!!!]
:) they had been dancing to "roads" off of "portishead:dummy".
the week after that, the camp took an excursion into boston and i bought "portishead:dummy"
for $7. ever since that day i have loved portishead more than i ever did at
first.
the following christmas i recieved two copies of "portishead:pnyc" because of a miscommunication as well as a miscommuniconception with my friend, ellery. no matter, though.. one copy is just in better condition than the other is all.
did you know.... that
there's a portishead song in the film, THE CRAFT.. but it's VERY UNFORTUNATELY
NOT ON THE SOUNDTRACK?!! well.. that's alright, because i downloaded the mp3
of it [the song is called "scorn" by the way] and it's really just "glory
box" with different background music.
it's wonderful all the
same.
