the P i x i e s

i believe it was summer of second grade when batman returns came out in theaters. it was at the same time that my dad constantly played the pixies' bossanova album. i instantly made this connection in my head with michelle pfeiffer's catwoman and the pixies song "is she weird". i wanted to be catwoman that halloween and carry around a mini cassette player with "is she weird" looped over and over again.

i began to get heavily into the pixies around ninth grade, when my dad played some of frank black's solo stuff and he unearthed the bossanova album once again.

i was very pleased to discover that "where is my mind" was used in the credits of fight club :)

these pixies fellows are a very happy band. i likes 'em.

LOOK! they're just so silly... sittin' in them pink flowers.

[yeah? so what about 'em?]

their western guitar.
that's one main reason...
frank black used to be known as black francis.
that's two...
their lyrics are like storytime.
that's three- wait-- huh?

frank black is a mastermind when it comes to writing songs. the lyrics themselves are obscure and you wonder sometimes: "alright, why is he singing about monkeys going to heaven?"

other times, the lyrics are .. straightforward. like "ole mulholland" [thats one of the songs off of frank black's solo album, teenager of the year] or "area 51".

...the pixies dont really have a genre, either. theyre obviously rock and i assume they'd be categorized into punk or something of the like. i find them to be one of the more admirable rock/punk groups i've heard of. well c'mon- they used to live in boston and then hitched out to cali... that's gotta have some sort of effect!
