what can i NOT say about
the cure?
everyone's sick of hearing me talk about them...
there must be at LEAST 50 times in one day that someone says something that
reminds me of the cure in some way [i haven't counted yet].
my favorite album.. very difficult to say.... it changes a lot. currently,
i'd have to say my favorite album is bloodflowers.. just because it's that
time of the year.
[um... what time of the year would that
be, vanessa?]
it's that time of the year that summer is withering and autumn begins
to fall. it's "the last day of summer" to relate it to bloodflowers.
there's some feeling of finality when summer ends... know wut i'm sayin?
[oh... that time of year.. i get it now.
heh.]
...being that i have fallen in love with a band like the cure amidst a
society that listens to rock/rap stuffs, a lot of people who haven't heard
of the cure ask me: "is that a woman?" when pointing to robert smith.
i've gotten quite used to it and i've had people listen to the cure and they
go: "oh! i know that song! i didnt know that was the cure! i thought
they were like... heavy metal or something?"
i won't bore you with the especially long, detailed story of how i got into the cure.. rather i'll give you an excerpt:
i was over at my cousin's house when i was two and my older cousin, brenna, had just recieved the staring at the sea video collection. she popped it in the VCR and i caught the video for "the walk". of course to me it just seemed to be a guy with big black hair sitting in a baby pool with paint all over him.
fast forward about 3 more years, when my dad played "disintegration" for me. "lovesong" was my favorite song off that cd and i was hooked. he then bought more cure albums, one of which was "japanese whispers". i heard "the walk" on that album, had a major case of deja-vu or some-such and remembered that was the song in the video i had seen at my cousin's house when i was two.
[hey, whydoya like this band so much, huh?]
good question. i think
i have an answer...
one of the reasons, i would have to say, is because they grew on me. i tended
to listen to them because i got hooked on them when i was a little kid.. thanks
to my dad.
though i have to say that the cure always have a song that perfectly fits any mood. i cant exactly put the cure in any genre.. all of their albums are distinctly different from each other, yet you can always tell it's the cure when you hear it.
they've been placed into the genres of "goth" and "pop" so much that its safe to call them "gothpop". i dont know if i'd exactly call them goth... i never thought of them as being goth except in seventh grade. i always thought of them as more or less 5 british guys that made great music.
something else i love about them.. their music, i found, is always ahead of their time. the cure doesnt sound like 80s synthesizer music or drum machine stuff (with the exception of their work from 81-83ish). you'll hear a song off of KissMex3 from 1987 and you wouldn't figure it to be an 80s song.
thats another thing... the cure haven't been one-hit wonders. they've constantly had multiple singles and they've not disappeared. i will paraphrase robert smith [i think it was him] when he said in 1997: people thought of the cure as an 80s band, but we've surpassed the 80s, and in a few years, we will have been a 90s band as well.
and as well as appearing 'serious'.. heh.. they're actually a bunch of silly guys! i like a band that can goof around as well as be artistic and profound- they're not a fabrication of a rock star life or anything. they come off to me being a real band. they aren't trying to impress anyone or make music that'll kick everyone else's ass or make music that'll bring a tear to your eye. they just make music; period.
the cure has this essence to them that no other band has. each band i think has a defining element.. the cure carry with them some sort of atmosphere that doesn't really have a label on it. it's difficult to define and perhaps it is undefinable. they haven't "sold out" but they have millions of fans worldwide. they go platinum, but there's plenty of people that have never heard of them.
they're .... a very refreshing band.
yeah. like a pepsi.
mmm..
pepsi.
